"Ellington at Newport" launched Ellington's comeback into the mainstream. It is a recording of a spectacular performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island in 1956, which exceeded all audience expectations and ensured Ellington's financial success for the rest of his life. The concert began with a strongly blues-influenced suite written especially for the festival, in which Ellington's agile piano riffs, Jimmy Hamilton's peppery clarinet interludes and Clark Terry's trumpet runs set the tone. The highlight of the evening, however, was a combination of the titles "Diminuendo in Blue" and "Crescendo in Blue" with tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves as soloist. The very first notes got the audience moving and by the seventh chorus people were dancing. And then, for 27 choruses, the hall turned into such a cauldron that the organisers were on the verge of abandoning the concert.
Remastered and pressed by RTI, Mobile Fidelity is now releasing this jazz classic in the Silver Series with unprecedented transparency and authenticity. Musically and sonically a must!
