"Somethin' Else" from 1958 is Cannonball Adderley's only Blue Note album and it would probably have gone down in music history just for the presence of Miles Davis. But it is more than that; Davis slipped into the role of sideman for the album. No, Adderley's work is now regarded as a milestone in jazz because of the chemistry between the band members, the enthusiasm of the contributors and the sophisticated arrangements - not to mention the first-class production.
The interpretations of 'Autumn Leaves' and 'Love for Sale' on 'Somethin' Else' are now regarded as the definitive recordings of these two songs. On "Autumn Leaves", Adderley and Davis take different approaches and yet it sounds like one piece. Davis' muted trumpet and Adderley's lush alto sax blend into a performance that is a model of expression, sophistication and musical flow. Blues and romance flow from their horns.
A masterpiece of jazz.
