Springsteen's debut, 'Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.', is a personal postcard from the heart of a rock'n'roller who was only 23 years old at the time and probably unaware of the legend he would become. The 1973 album contains many of the characteristic themes and sounds that would characterise Bruce Springsteen throughout his incomparable career. It's no wonder that many of the songs - including 'Blinded by the Light', 'Lost in the Flood' and 'Spirit in the Night' - are still an integral part of the New Jersey-born musician's legendary concerts.
MFSL's one-step LP boxes are the benchmark for audiophile reissues, and can even be placed above the other productions of the world's most famous remastering studio. The original analogue tape was converted into a 4xDSD file by the MFSL engineers, who adjusted the tape's track position and bias setting for each individual track. This was then used to create the lacquer cut at the Sebastopol studio. What's special about the LPs is not only the new carbon-free vinyl granules used at RTI in Camarillo, but also the one-step LP manufacturing process. The only place you can get close to the sound of the master tape is at MFSL's studio in California.
What this means is this: In normal LP production, the lacquer cut is turned into an initial "father stamp with inverted groove structure". This is then used to create a "mother stamp" with the correct groove structure. This is then used to create the actual press stamp with the inverted groove structure, which is then used to press the actual LP with the correct groove structure. This approach allows almost any number of LPs to be pressed with just one coating cut.
The one-step process makes this much easier. The actual lacquer cut itself is converted directly to the press stamp with which the LP is produced. This eliminates two steps of mechanical conversion. Unfortunately, however, only a limited number of LPs can be produced with each lacquer cut. So if more than a few hundred LPs are to be produced, several lacquer cuts are required. MFSL has issued the motto that a new set of press dies should be used every 500 copies. This means that for a run of 7,500 copies, fifteen sets of four lacquer cuts are used. However, as things can sometimes go wrong in production, 18 sets are usually produced. This means that 72 lacquer cuts are produced for the double LP. By hand, one after the other. Every day, the lacquer cuts are flown by express to RTI for reworking and then a test pressing has to be made for each side and listened to in the MFSL studio. A time-consuming and expensive process that leads to an expensive product and high collector demand. The delivery takes place in an elaborate box. The serial number is entered by hand on the back. MFSL declares that there will be no further represses.
The UltraDisc One-Step 180g 33RPM LP from Mobile Fidelity is limited to 7,500 numbered copies and boasts an impressive clarity and directness, not least thanks to the almost non-existent noise of the 'SuperVinyl'.
