The year 1966 brought some outstanding music releases. Alongside the Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds' and the Beatles' 'Revolver', Bob Dylan's 'Blonde on Blonde' was hailed as a milestone by music critics and voted number 9 of the 500 best albums of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. Stylistically self-contained, Dylan's music seems to transcend time, defy space, suspend reality and tell the listener truths about himself that he has never known before. Those who engage with Dylan's dark, cryptic lyrics embark on a surreal journey into dreamlike fantasy worlds, from which they may return changed.
For the recordings, Dylan, who was accompanied by Al Kooper, 'Pig' Robbins, Joe South, Kenny Buttrey and Jaime Robertson among others, had his producer Bob Johnston remove the partitions in the studio so that the musicians could react to each other. This gave the sound a more natural quality as it moved from microphone to microphone. Rob LoVerde's remastering for Mobile Fidelity makes the room audible, with its echoes and resonances, resulting in one of the truest sonic renditions you'll ever hear.
