Billy Joel had become commercially successful with the albums "52nd Street" and "The Strangers", but he was accused of actually being a soft rocker for radio stations. A criticism, which the idol did not want to accept and answered with the 1980 album "Glass Houses". While Joel probably never sounded so rocky again, this musical mixture exactly met the taste of the New Wave era and the radio stations of that time.
The album won the Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance and yet is a remarkable example of the blending of cleanly produced pop arrangements and the various varieties of rock music. The track "It is still Rock'n'Roll to me" became Billy Joel's first number one hit in the U.S. and the entire album remained at number one on the U.S. charts for six weeks.
