None other than Booker T. Jones produced singer and guitarist Bill Withers' debut album for Stax Records in 1971. The 'Architect of Memphis Soul' helped Withers to chart success: 'Ain't No Sunshine' helped him break through to gold status. Many more hits followed throughout his career, including the unforgettable "Lean on Me" and "Use Me". In 1973, Withers and his band played a concert at Carnegie Hall that is now one of the jewels of live albums from the 60s and 70s.
Withers shows maturity and vulnerability on stage. His songs deal with difficult subjects such as poverty, war, growing up, but also friendship, family and love - with the greatest possible ease, directness and without preaching. His voice is as relaxed as it is groovy, and his band is a perfect unit. Bill Withers' Live at Carnegie Hall can hold its own against such gems as James Brown's Live at the Apollo and B.B. King's Live at the Regal. A must for any record collection. Mastered for Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab by Shawn R. Britton, the reissue is a limited edition hybrid SACD in a gatefold sleeve with serial number and manual.
