"Undercurrent" was Bill Evans' first recording after the fatal car accident of his bassist colleague Scott LaFaro. For almost a year, the pianist recorded nothing - with the exception of four solos in April 1962 - before arranging two studio sessions with guitarist Jim Hall. Evans and Hall formed an immensely creative duo. Both had roots in bebop while espousing an introspective style with progressive harmonies. "Undercurrent" is the result of an intimate collaboration, an almost brotherly chemistry between the two musicians, and an excellent selection of tracks.
Standards like "My Funny Valentine", the Broadway classic "Darn That Dream" or the Hall composition "Romain" are presented by the duo with a well-placed mix of hard bop elements and romantic whispers. A touching experiment, remastered for Mobile Fidelity by Krieg Wunderlich. The 140g LP is released in gatefold cover with consecutive serial number in limited edition.
