It took Columbia Records' lawyers seven months to get Janis Joplin and her band out of an unhappy contractual relationship with Mainstream Records. Only after that, in August 1968 Cheap Thrills could appear. A celebrated performance at the Monterey Pop Festival the year before had created a furor and brought Joplin to the public's attention, but other than a poorly produced LP, no record of hers had been released until then. Expectations were high - and Cheap Thrills lived up to them. The number one album sold over a million copies and cemented Joplin's reputation as the first true female rock superstar.
Her extraordinary vocal talent, her unmistakable blues voice takes you right back to 1968, and one thing is certain: you can't imitate singer Janis Joplin or match her class. Cheap Thrills is released in a numbered, limited edition as a hybrid SACD, remastered by Rob LoVerde. The cover artwork is by American illustrator and artist Robert Crumb.
