There are classic piano jazz combos like sand on the beach. And even the names Joey Calderazzo on piano, James Genus on bass and Clarence Penn on drums don't cause a stir by themselves. At least not if you didn't have your ear to the ground in New York in the mid-90s. Rather already the name of the producer, namely Joe Harley should provide for sensation. This is the name that stands for countless excellent Blue Note recordings.
However, Joe Harley did not want to record just another jazz trio with piano. And what does piano even mean here, it's about the flagship of the company Steinway & Sons, which stood for nine years in Carnegie Hall before it found its home in this recording studio. In addition, eight other musicians play a hot set with horn section and a beautiful guitar and cello combination on the first piece.
And one more little thing makes this 1995 recording remarkable. It is a full analog recording on a Studer 820A tape machine at 76cm/sec recording speed. The best from Neumann, AKG and Sennheiser were used for the microphones. The combination results in a wonderfully smooth and almost floating jazz album with excellent spatial presence and stupendous dynamics. Jazz for connoisseurs with a re-mastering by mixing desk legend Tohru Kotetsu, who was already responsible for the sound of the Three Blind Mice.
