The amazing Judee Sill was the first artist signed to David Geffen's Asylum Records, and Judee Sill was the first album released on the label. Sill's music is spiritual, steeped in mysticism and divine imagery. It is based on great songwriting and her pure but powerful singing voice. "Judee Sill" conveys an incredible intimacy, enhanced by her sometimes complex string/orchestral arrangements.
Sill's life was tragic both personally and professionally. Her father and brother died young and her tempestuous relationship with her alcoholic mother led to her leaving home at 15. She committed robberies and began a battle with drug addiction that she eventually lost. When the success of her two albums failed to materialise, her career never recovered. Sill died in 1979, aged just 35.
Sill's albums were not marketable and she never achieved commercial success. However, her work influenced many artists and Warren Zevon, Shawn Colvin and Steven Wilson were among the fans of her music. The remastering for Intervention Records was done by Kevin Gray.
