In the search for titles worthy of reissue, one occasionally comes across a gem that, for one reason or another, has not yet achieved the popularity it deserves. Impex's SACD remaster of Kenny Dorham's Matador is such a case.
Matador was recorded in a single day in 1962. It includes Jackie McLean's epic Melanie, Dorham's El Matador and a stirring version of Beautiful Love. Bobby Timmons (piano), Teddy Smith (bass) and J.C. Moses (drums) provide nuanced support for the exchange of fascinating solos by trumpeter Kenny Dorham and saxophonist Jackie McLean. Emotional musical explorations combine with accessible post-bop structures to create a stirring blend that appeals to the feet, head and heart alike.
