A stunning work, now available in unprecedented sound quality. The original analogue recordings from 24 March 1972 (Symphony Hall, Boston) form the basis of Christoph Stickel's unobtrusive "reworking", which aims to avoid any artistic intervention.
"The Boston Symphony has never sounded better," wrote Stereo Review in 1971, and another review stated: "Listening to it reveals a most exquisite interpretation, played with passion and feeling". These were the reviews of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's recording of Zarathustra, conducted by William Steinberg.
Strauss's Zarathustra is not only a "philosophy in notes", but also a systematically structured work of symphonic music, with all the necessary climaxes and contrasts, in which Richard Strauss demonstrates the orchestral palette with virtuosity.
