This live recording from the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival is considered a classic of piano trio jazz. The universally acclaimed Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander was a fixture on the MPS roster, adding a dash of Caribbean soul to the virtuosity of Oscar Peterson, to whom he is often compared. This is Monty's first recording with the trio widely regarded as his best: bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton.
Ahmad Jamal's "Nite Mist Blues" ranges from barrelhouse to swinging modern, while the pop song "Feelings" has a soulful feel with a hint of Latin. Ellington's 'Satin Doll' opens with a dash of boogie and a variety of glossy textures. Bass and piano impress on Nat Adderley's funky "Work Song", "Drown in My Own Tears" brims with soulful gospel before segueing into the theatrical "Battle Hymn of the Republic", complete with military drum rolls, funky marches and swinging virtuoso jazz. After four and a half decades, the magic of a night in Montreux is still palpable.
