Argerich, undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists of all time, has delighted audiences and critics alike since the beginning of her career in the 1950s. Shortly after winning the prestigious Chopin Competition in 1965, Argerich recorded this concerto at Abbey Road Studios, which was released in 1999 and has since achieved cult status.
"When Martha Argerich entered the studio, it was her dark, luminous gaze that first caught my eye. When I offered her a cup, she gulped it down and asked for more. I sat her down in the studio with a large pot of coffee and went into the control room. At first, her hands moved casually over the keyboard as she tested the piano. Then she began Chopin's Polonaise Op. 53. I sat up in my chair with a long drawn-out 'Jee-sus' - the sound engineer said 'Wow'! (Producer Suvi Raj Grubb)
