From 1969 to 1978, the Italian conductor Carlo Maria Giulini was the permanent guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Georg Solti, desiring the support of another conductor, had suggested this arrangement in order to fulfill his obligations at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Giulini was a perfect complement to Solti and produced some excellent recordings for EMI with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
This Mahler recording is convincing for its beautiful phrasing and precise orchestra. Giulini does not succumb to the temptation to exploit the virtuosity of the musicians and achieve enthusiasm by fast tempo. Add to this the very good recording quality of the tapes, produced on March 30, 1971 at Medinah Temple in Chicago by Christopher Bishop and Carson Taylor. A recommendation!
