More than 15 years ago, “Greek jazz” was still flying under the radar of the cognoscenti. That is no longer the case: the Greek jazz scene is growing, flourishing and producing truly wonderful works. One need only think of the great releases by Petros Klampanis or Stravos Lantsias – the latter being label-mate of Georgius “George” Trantalidis. Trantalidis is an outstanding figure in Greek jazz, best known for his work with the band Sphinx and his numerous contributions to the development of the genre in Greece.
The double LP 'Looking Back' marks Trantalidis' return to the music scene after a 20-year hiatus since his previous album 'am:pm' and demonstrates his lasting influence: Omer Ashano, Konstantinos Stouraitis, Yiannis Stavropoulos, Tony Lakatos, Dennis Pol, Vironas Ntolas and Gilad Atzmon, to Sofia Labropoulou, Manuel Orza, Kostas Meretakis, Vasilis Xenopoulos, Pantelis Benetatos, George Kontrafouris, Alkistis Lampropoulou, Dimitris Papadopoulos, Kimon Karoutzos, Alexis Bove, George Trantalidis and many more – the guest list reads like a “Who's Who” of the Greek jazz scene. “Looking Back” contains an exciting collection of jazz compositions that combine traditional Greek musical elements with contemporary influences and reflect Trantalidis' rich musical heritage and innovative approach.
The Hellenic Jazz Society record label began operating in June 2024 with the aim of producing high-fidelity albums of the local jazz scene. The steady rise of the Greek jazz scene has prompted “HJS” to promote talented Greek musicians at home and abroad. All Hellenic Jazz Society albums are recorded and pressed to high quality standards – with 180 grams of heavy vinyl and high-quality printed gatefold sleeves. HJS's previous releases have been enthusiastically received by the music media, music lovers and audiophiles worldwide!
