More than 15 years ago, “Greek jazz” was still flying under the radar of the cognoscenti. That is no longer the case: the Greek jazz scene is growing, flourishing and producing truly wonderful works. One need only think of the great releases by Petros Klampanis or Stravos Lantsias. “Brothers From Another Mother” is a music collective founded by drummer Spyros Panagiotopoulos in 2015, which has since performed extensively on the Athens jazz scene. The group initially started out by reworking selected standards from the hard-bop era of jazz. At the same time, the members began working on their own compositions, influenced by the style and aesthetics of that era.
And so, in the spring of 2019, they set about recording their debut album: “Happy Hour” was created in a single, five-hour session in Studio E of the Greek Radio and Television (ERT). The live recording captures the spontaneous energy and chemistry of the band, which consists of six of the most important personalities on the Greek jazz scene. The brilliant sounding reissue of the double LP by Ikaros Music from 2020 contains nine original compositions that show the ensemble's coherent interplay and individual virtuosity.
The Hellenic Jazz Society record label began operating in June 2024 with the aim of producing high-fidelity albums of the local jazz scene. The steady rise of the Greek jazz scene has prompted “HJS” to promote talented Greek musicians at home and abroad. All Hellenic Jazz Society albums are recorded and pressed to high quality standards – with 180 grams of heavy vinyl and high-quality printed gatefold sleeves. HJS's previous releases have been enthusiastically received by the music media, music lovers and audiophiles worldwide!
