Liza Minelli is one of the few artists to have won all four major US entertainment industry awards during her career: Academy Award, Grammy Award, Emmy Award and Tony Award. The daughter of Judy Garland, she shot to international fame playing vaudevillian Sally Bowles in the film Cabaret and sang her unofficial anthem to the city with the title theme of the Scorsese film New York, New York, later sung to international success by Frank Sinatra.
But the greater the fame, the greater the fall. Throughout the 1980s, the former Broadway queen made headlines for her affairs, drug addiction and a series of stints in rehab. It was not until 1987 that she made a comeback with a three-week residency at New York's Carnegie Hall. There were 17 sold-out concerts in a row, a record that has not been broken. The repertoire included well-known jazz standards and musicals, accompanied by a 45-piece orchestra. The highlights can be heard on this Telarc recording.
The recording succeeds in bringing the atmosphere of Carnegie Hall into the present day. The miking is designed to create an overall sound with reverb rather than individual instruments. Anyone wondering about the track combinations will notice that Liza Minnelli allows the songs to flow musically into one another, even interspersing several medleys with hits from Broadway plays.

This mastering format has been developed by FIM and Five/Four Productions. Five/Four Productions is made up of the former Telarc production team who wanted to be able to master the best possible sound quality regardless of the quality of the equipment. The Five/Four Productions team has won 16 Grammys and countless other awards.
It is re-digitised at 32-bit word length and sampling frequency to match the source material. Wherever possible, 192 KHz is used, but for some material, lower sampling rates can be beneficial to the sound.
