In 1958, vibraphonist Cal Tjader and tenor saxophonist Stan Getz joined Vince Guaraldi (piano), Eddie Duran (guitar), Scott La Faro (bass) and Billy Higgins (drums) to record a selection of fine jazz standards and Tjader compositions. Getz shared with Tjader an enthusiasm for Latin American and Afro-Cuban sounds, which can also be heard on "Sextet." In the early '60s, the saxophonist expanded this passion together with Charlie Byrd. At the end of the 50s, however, he was mainly interested in making a recording with a vibraphonist.
Getz and Tjader had known each other for a number of years, but due to differing schedules and touring commitments, they did not manage to get into the studio together until February 1958. Together with the extremely talented fellow musicians they had chosen, they produced an outstanding album in just three hours. Legend has it that there was not a second take. The remastering for First Impression Music now presents "Sextet" in even finer resolution.
