In 2009, 79-year-old jazz drummer Jimmy Cobb – at the time the last surviving member of the famous Miles Davis band that recorded the legendary album “Kind of Blue” – experienced a renaissance as a bandleader: Together with the rising star of Texas trumpet and flugelhorn master Roy Hargrove, as well as guitarist Russell Malone and bassist John Webber, Cobb recorded “Jazz In The Key Of Blue” – an exquisite collection of quiet, atmospheric, late-night ballads. The quartet offers breathtaking interpretations of standards from the Great American Songbook, as well as jazzy covers of pop hits and impressive original compositions. Cobb’s inspiring collaboration with Miles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly, and others spanned from 1957 to 1963 and included many masterpieces. “Jazz In The Key Of Blue” once again demonstrates Jimmy Cobb’s skills as a bandleader; his unwavering, rock-solid swing paved the way for the rhythms and sounds of another generation of jazz musicians.
