Born in Cincinnati, USA, jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch began playing the piano at the age of four and attended the New England Conservatory in Boston until graduating in 1977. He later moved to New York, where he quickly became a sought-after pianist. Significantly influenced by Bill Evans, Hersch made a name for himself as a crossover artist between jazz and classical music, initially performing as a sideman for musicians such as Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Gary Burton, Art Farmer and Charlie Haden. Hersch soon attracted international attention with his own compositions, band projects and especially his solo programs. He was the first musician to have the honor of performing his solo piano program for a week at the famous Village Vanguard. Hersch has been nominated for a Grammy ten times, both for “Best Instrumental Jazz Recording” and “Best Instrumental Composition”. “Fred Hersch Solo” (2015) won a Coup de Coeur from the Académie Charles Cros as well as the Grand Prix from the French Académie du Jazz. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003 for his compositions. In 2016, the Jazz Journalists Association honored him as “Jazz Pianist of the Year.”
Fred Hersch made his debut for Chesky Records in 1991 with a quintet album called “Forward Motion”. He reduced the band for the recordings of “Dancing In The Dark” to a trio, which he recorded together with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Tom Rainey. “Dancing In The Dark” is a remarkable exploration of the Great American Songbook and offers spectacular reinterpretations of timeless songs such as “I Fall In Love Too Easily,” “For All We Know” and “My Funny Valentine.” With their almost telepathic interplay, the Fred Hersch Trio reveals new perspectives on familiar evergreens and demonstrates how jazz and its culture of improvisation can transform familiar melodies and harmonic structures into new and exciting listening experiences. “Dancing In The Dark” was nominated for a Grammy and remains one of the most important albums in the Chesky Records back catalog. We are delighted to now be able to present this special gem as a new LP edition – for the first time using the superior One-Step process, pressed on 180-gram vinyl (33 RPM)!
