After eight albums for various labels, New York-born musician Alexis Cole finally joined Chesky Records in 2014 to record “A Kiss In The Dark.” Recorded with just a single high-resolution microphone, her Chesky debut also features Alexis Cole's superb collaborators: guitarist Saul Rubin, saxophonist and clarinetist Dan Block, bassist Pat O'Leary and drummer Phil Stewart. On “A Kiss In The Dark,” the band performs live, allowing the singer to delve deep into jazz history with her velvety voice, adding a contemporary touch to the song repertoire from the late 1910s and early 1920s. Her seductively deep voice, which embraces these timeless melodies from the salon song era and Tin Pan Alley days, rightly draws comparisons to vocal divas such as Sarah Vaughan and Anita O'Day. Alexis Cole won third place at the Shure Montreux Jazz Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2003 and 2005. In 2007, she was the winner of the Jazzmobile Vocal Contest in New York City. She also received a Swing Journal Gold Disk Award.
Swingers like “Chicago, That Toddlin' Town,” moving blues songs like “Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out,” or dreamy ballads like “Indian Summer” show why Alexis Cole, with her golden voice, is one of America's best jazz singers. The recording is part of Chesky Records' “Binaural+ Series,” which, thanks to groundbreaking recording technology, is characterized by greater realism and transports listeners into the recording room. We are delighted to present this special gem in the Chesky discography as an audiophile Hybrid SACD that brilliantly showcases Cheskys renowned production and recording techniques!
