The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields was founded in 1959 by Sir Neville Marriner and a group of leading London orchestra musicians. Originally founded as a small string ensemble without a conductor, it pioneered the Baroque renaissance in the 1960s and, with Sir Neville Marriner, has recorded and performed a rapidly growing repertoire, with over 500 recordings. The years 1717 to 1723, during which Bach was in the service of Prince Leopold at the court in Köthen, were particularly productive for Bach, and some of his best-known works date from this period, including the Brandenburg Concertos. These represent a high point in the history of the Baroque concerto and are among Bach's most admired compositions worldwide. He wrote this group of six popular concerti grossi on commission from the Margrave of Brandenburg, hence the title.
