“Getz/Gilberto” is arguably THE bossa nova classic par excellence. And not only that: the album by Stan Getz, João and Astrud Gilberto is one of the most famous Verve albums and one of the best-selling jazz records of all time. Sometimes chance writes the most beautiful stories – as in the case of “Getz/Gilberto.” Astrud Gilberto had actually only accompanied her husband João to the recordings as an interpreter. But then Stan Getz let Astrud, even though she was not a professional singer, sing the songs “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Corcovado.” The album, which also featured Carlos Anton Jobim (piano) and drumming legend Milton Banana, became a worldwide hit and was the first jazz production ever to win the Grammy for Album of the Year.
Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto are an unlikely pair. The New Yorker, son of Ukrainian immigrants, and the Brazilian Gilberto nevertheless brought a style that had previously been little represented in the charts to the forefront with just one recording.
