“Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley” was recorded in New York on June 27 and 29 and August 23 and 24, 1961, and was released in February 1962 by Capitol Records. Produced by Tom “Tippy” Morgan and Andy Wiswell, the album – which brought together the unique jazz singer and the legendary saxophonist’s quintet – reached No. 30 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and is now considered a milestone in jazz history. “The Penguin Guide to Jazz” writes: “The exception is the recording with Nancy Wilson for Capitol, which was conceived primarily as a platform for the young singer but also includes five tracks featuring only the band. Wilson distinguished herself with self-assured phrasing and a melodramatic emphasis on key passages – yet here we find a version of ‘A Sleeping Bee’ that ranks among the most charming of all her recordings, and Cannon and the others play with consistent sensitivity.” David Nathan’s AllMusic review reached the following conclusion: “Given the track list and the outstanding artists performing it, it’s hard to understand why this classic album should be missing from any serious jazz collection.”
AudioNautes praises “Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley” as an LP with outstanding sound quality. The impressive remastering is based on an old safety copy of the original stereo master tape. Pressed by Optimal Media on 180-gram HQ vinyl and cut at 33 RPM by Scott Hull (Masterdisk), the LP comes in a sturdy and luxurious gatefold sleeve with liner notes by Fabio Camorani.
