Tony Joe White, nicknamed “Swamp Fox,” released his fourth album and his first for Warner Bros. Records in 1971. The album was recorded in December 1970 within two weeks in two different studios in Memphis. Its producer was none other than London-born Peter Asher, who had just produced James Taylor's early hits for the label, would later work for Linda Ronstadt, and would become one of the most successful producers of the 1970s. On “Tony Joe White.,” he ensured that White could immerse himself with heart and passion in the turbulence of the late 60s and early 70s. “The Change” sets the tone, a smoky, spoken sermon that captures the longing for progress at that time. “I Just Walked Away,” the album's standout single, is a mixture of Southern funk and raw emotional power, while “The Daddy” and “Five Summers For Jimmy” reveal White's tender, introspective side. The autobiographical “A Night In The Life Of A Swamp Fox” concludes the album with a nod to the man behind the myth – a musician exhausted by life on tour, caught between fame and freedom. “Tony Joe White.” is a milestone for one of the most distinctive voices in music history – a swamp rock masterpiece full of social reflection and Southern soul, raw and timelessly American.
