Before “Full House” caused a sensation, The Wes Montgomery Trio set the mood. The album “A Dynamic New Sound: Guitar/Organ/Drums,” released in 1959, was Montgomery's debut on Riverside Records – and it's fair to say that he didn't exactly tiptoe onto the stage: he stormed in – with confident thumb picking, octave magic, and an incredibly warm tone! Jazz fans didn't just nod their heads politely – they were thrilled. Critics described the album as “fresh, hip, and groundbreaking.” Montgomery's style, which combined bluesy soul with stunning technical control, immediately found an audience. It wasn't just a good debut – it was a statement! And it sold well, helping Wes break through in the jazz world.
The subtitle says it all: Guitar. Organ. Drums. That's it! No bass, no horns, no safety net. Just Wes Montgomery on guitar, the criminally underrated Melvin Rhyne on Hammond B-3, and Paul Parker on drums. The result? A sound so lean and soulful that it practically invented the jazz organ trio aesthetic we know and love today. Wes' tone? Velvet meets tension. Melvin's organ playing? Sunday church meets a smoky after-hours club. Paul's drumming? Like a good bartender – never flashy, but always exactly what you need. “A Dynamic New Sound: Guitar/Organ/Drums” was a bold move... and it worked. Why? Because these guys listened to each other. They harmonized perfectly and gave Wes the space to shine. You can hear the joy of playing and the energy of three guys who knew they had created something special.
As part of the “Analogue Productions Fantasy 45 Series”, “A Dynamic New Sound: Guitar/Organ/Drums” is now being honored with a sonically outstanding reissue, lovingly mastered by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at Acoustech Mastering. The double LP, pressed on 180-gram vinyl by industry leader Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and cut at 45 RPM, comes in an old-style tip-on gatefold jacket from Stoughton Printing with a scuff-resistant, matte finish.
