When Bob Marley died, he was one of the world's first global superstars – famous and celebrated from Europe to Africa to America. Some saw him not just as a reggae singer, but as a folk hero, a kind of freedom fighter. And to this day, his legacy is bigger than the music he made, wrote Pitchfork. In the 21st century, Bob Marley is a global cultural icon and the first Jamaican to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “Burnin'” is the sixth album by the Wailers, released in October 1973. All three members of the band – Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer – wrote and produced the album together and recorded it in Jamaica. It was the last album by the Wailers in this magnificent line-up: Tosh and Bunny subsequently left the band to pursue solo careers, and the era of “Bob Marley & The Wailers” was yet to come. In 2003, the album ranked No. 319 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
“Burnin'” finally brought the Wailers international fame, led by the classics “I Shot The Sheriff” (a later US No. 1 hit for Eric Clapton) and the timeless anthem “Get Up, Stand Up,” which was adopted by civil rights activists worldwide. “Burnin'” was, in a way, a summary of the Wailers' development to date. The album, full of revolutionary passion and fervor, was also the last heroic essence of a lineup that had accompanied the youthful Wailers, Tosh and Marley on their journey from the streets of Trenchtown to the brink of worldwide fame. Although they were considered a “new” band in the UK and America, the Wailers had been singing and recording songs together since 1963 and had an extensive repertoire that was largely unknown outside Jamaica. Several tracks on “Burnin'” were re-recordings of songs that had been released previously. “Put It On,” a gentle, spiritual groove featuring the vocals of “Lord I Thank You”, had been released as a single on the Studio One label in Jamaica in 1965 and was one of the first songs to coin the term “toasting” to describe the lyrical singing style of dancehall DJs. Similarly, “Duppy Conqueror” and “Small Axe” were re-recordings of songs that were old favorites in the Wailers' history.
Analogue Productions now honors this masterful album with a sonically outstanding hybrid SACD, based on Ryan K. Smith's remastering of the original tapes at Sterling Sound, offering a previously unheard sound quality of this reggae classic.
