Behind the Prestige All Stars on this recording are the four tenor saxophonists John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. The unlikely meeting of four musicians from different 'schools' was part of the Prestige label's Friday jam sessions. They are joined by the Red Garland Trio, with Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums. The saxophonists play blues and two older Mobley standards. What is surprising about this recording is that the stylistic differences between the four saxophonists do not play a major role, but rather the admirable ability of the four to find common ground in an unusual session.
The hybrid mono SACD appears in a mini-LP sleeve as part of a series of 50 reissues from the legendary Prestige label. There will be 25 mono and 25 stereo recordings. The mastering was done by Kevin Gray at his Cohearent Audio Studios.
