The Dave Brubeck Quartet recorded this album in 1959 and Columbia Records was initially less than enthusiastic. Brubeck had ventured away from the classical 3/4 and 4/4 time and actively tried new things. The result was enormously successful and, contrary to the opinion of critics at the time, not a betrayal of jazz. Or to put it flippantly: The album is really good, although so many people like it. The album also contains the famous piece "Take Five" by Paul Desmond.
