The self-titled solo debut from the most musically adventurous member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is a masterpiece! Bluesy rock, Latin American grooves and the pure, unfiltered energy of Stephen Stills made the album, released in November 1970, an instant success: Worldwide top ten chart positions and the hit “Love The One You're With” ensured that the album, produced by Bill Halverson, quickly went gold. In 1974, it was voted number 70 on the NME's list of the best albums of all time and was later included in the legendary book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.” Guest appearances by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton certainly contributed to the album's huge success.
Stills' songs are every bit as good as those of the other CSNY band members, but here his unique personality comes to the fore: Stills' genre shifts never seem disjointed. The production is warm and haunting, with Stills playing most of the instruments himself of course. The second single release, “Sit Yourself Down,” is a good example of the album's atmosphere: here he doesn't just play guitar – Stills literally wrestles with it, laying his virtuosity over structures that sound both carefully crafted and effortlessly cool!
As part of the “Atlantic 75 Series,” Analogue Productions is now honoring this masterful album with a sonically outstanding reissue, lovingly mastered by Bernie Grundman: The double LP, pressed on 180-gram vinyl by industry leader Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and cut at 45 RPM, comes in a luxurious old-style tip-on gatefold double pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing.
