On their only studio recording together in 1959, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and tenor saxophonist John Coltrane form a surprisingly complementary team – even though Coltrane's musical approach was more modern than Jackson's. Nevertheless, “Bags” and “Trane” managed to expand in a surprisingly lyrical way, thanks in part to the great support of Hank Jones (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Connie Kay (drums).
Two original compositions by Jackson, including the well-known “The Late Late Blues”, and three standards – a rollicking “Three Little Words”, “The Night We Called It a Day” and the fast-paced “Be-Bop” – make up the album's set list. The highlight is the same-named opening track, which is bursting with late-night coolness. The playful, lively fluidity inherent in “Bags & Trane” enchanted a large number of critics and made the album a veritable bestseller.
The attractive deluxe reissue by Analogue Productions, released to mark the 75th anniversary of Atlantic Records, pays tribute to this gem by the two legendary hard boppers.
