Recorded within three days in March 1961, this Miles Davis album dates from the same period as "Sketches of Spain." John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly had left the quintet shortly before and the rhythm section now consisted only of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and on drums alternatively Philly Joe Jones and Jimmy Cobb. Malicious tongues claim that this collaboration with Miles Davis later let them form the Wynton Kelly Trio.
In addition, Hank Mobley and John Coltrane are used as guest musicians on saxophone. Especially Mobley, who offers wonderfully bluesy solos here, has to subordinate himself to band leader Davis. All in all, an excellent album with relaxed jazz by full professionals who don't have to chase after a hit.
