In 1963, Miles Davis was in a transitional phase of his career, without a permanent band, and wondering what his future musical direction might be. It was at this time that he recorded the music on this disc. He was in the process of forming a new band, as you can see from the line-up: George Coleman on tenor sax; Victor Feldman (who turned down the job) and Herbie Hancock on piano; Ron Carter on bass; Frank Butler and Tony Williams on drums.
Recorded in two sessions, highlights include the classic "Seven Steps To Heaven", "Joshua" and slow, passionate versions of "Basin Street Blues" and "Baby Won't You Please Come Home".
