Coltrane's final album for Atlantic Records – released in November 1961 – encapsulates the exploratory themes he would develop on his simultaneously-recorded debut for Impulse! “Africa/Brass”: Both albums feature nested rhythmic shifts and Spanish-inspired textures – compositions that only a pioneer with unearthly musical abilities could create. For "Olé Coltrane" the exceptional saxophonist joined a stellar band that included pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and an unnamed Eric Dolphy.
Coltrane's interest in Spanish music, evident on "Olé Coltrane", may have been inspired by Sketches Of Spain, the legendary album by his former employer Miles Davis. However, “Olé Coltrane” welcomed improvisations that went beyond conventional parameters – without losing sight of melodic beauty.
(All About Jazz) wrote about “Olé Coltrane”: “A magnificent milestone in ‘Trane's’ artistic development and a must-have recording for every collection.” We couldn't agree more!
