Coltrane was known for pushing the boundaries of jazz and expanding the possibilities of the saxophone as an instrument. Coltrane's improvisations on 'My Favourite Things' from 1961 are characterised by intensity, virtuosity and sheer creativity and mark an important turning point in Coltrane's career.
The recording was made during the same sessions that produced most of the albums 'Coltrane Plays the Blues' (1962), 'Coltrane's Sound' (1964) and 'Coltrane Legacy'. The title track is a modal interpretation of the Rodgers & Hammerstein song "My Favourite Things" from the film "The Sound of Music". Coltrane is accompanied by McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums
