“Coltrane Jazz” is the first album to hit the shelves after ‘Giant Steps’. The recordings were made in November and December 1959. With the exception of ‘Village Blues’, which was not recorded until the end of 1960, Coltrane played with pianist Wynton Kelly and the Miles Davis rhythm section: Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. The moody “Village Blues” features McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Steve Davis on bass – much of the lineup that, with Jimmy Garrison (bass), would form the foundation of Coltrane's most influential and beloved albums from the 1960s.
The quartet plays three standards, but the band really comes into its own with Coltrane's original material, particularly “Harmonique” with its melodic leaps, high-register saxophone lines and windings, slightly oriental-sounding main riffs, and “Like Sonny,” which is dedicated to Sonny Rollins.
To mark the 75th anniversary of Atlantic Records, Analogue Productions is honoring “Coltrane Jazz” with a new edition of excellent sound quality.
