Hard bop saxophonist Jackie McLean makes his second appearance as a bandleader on 1957's Lights Out! McLean's style still showed the influence of Charlie Parker, who had died only a year earlier. At the same time, he occasionally ventured out of the artistic safety of imitation and experimented with tonal variations. In everything he plays, McLean moves on a solid blues foundation and develops improvisations with trumpeter Donald Byrd. Elmo Hope on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Art Taylor on drums complete the quintet.
The hybrid mono SACD appears in a mini-LP cover as part of a series of 50 reissues by the legendary Prestige label. There will be 25 mono and 25 stereo recordings. The mastering was done by Kevin Gray at his Cohearent Audio Studios.
