Jackie McLean was already an established prestige artist when he hired trumpeter Bill Hardman for a recording in 1956. Together with Mal Waldron on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, "Jackie's Pal" was born. Hardman does not yet sound as powerful here as on his later collaborations with The Messengers, but his style is already clearly recognizable.
