What a meeting! The smart, self-confident Gene Ammons and a dream team of jazz legends come together for a jam session in a class of its own – and thank goodness someone thought to press “record.” The result is called “Blue Gene”! This gem from 1958 not only has a bluesy working title – it is bluesy! Thanks to pianist Mal Waldron, who wrote the entire set list, including the haunting ballad “Hip Tip” in minor, three of the four pieces glide like a Cadillac with velvet seats over familiar blues chord progressions. Gene Ammons, aka “Jug,” brings his famously expressive tenor saxophone and teams up with two of the best horn players ever: the astute and soulful Idrees Sulieman on trumpet and baritone luminary Pepper Adams. This trio doesn't just converse – it duels! All of the musicians had jammed with Gene before, so the chemistry between them is remarkably good. “Blue Gene” is a must for any lover of Golden Era jazz – an equal blend of intelligence, power and bluesy brilliance.
As part of the “Analogue Productions Fantasy 45 Series”, “Blue Gene” is now being honored with a sonically outstanding reissue, lovingly mastered by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at Acoustech Mastering. The double LP, pressed on 180-gram vinyl by industry leader Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and cut at 45 RPM, comes in an old-style tip-on gatefold jacket from Stoughton Printing with a scuff-resistant, matte finish.
