Jascha Heifetz was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, violinists of the 20th century. On this recording, he plays Tchaikovsky's violin concertos with a level of intimacy and enthusiasm that perhaps only he could achieve. Tchaikovsky's work was initially considered unplayable, which devastated the Russian composer. Leopold Auer of all people, one of the great virtuosos and later Heifetz's teacher, refused to premiere the concertos. It was only three years after this refusal that Adolf Brodsky took up the composition and Auer changed his mind.
