180g Vinyl, LP. “Ella And Oscar” – recorded on May 19, 1975, at Cherokee, Los Angeles, California – is an album that you can listen to over and over again. Bassist Ray Brown, who was closely associated with both artists, can be heard on four tracks, but this is clearly a duo project focusing on two close friends who happen to be among the most historically significant figures in jazz.

To describe this collection of standards from the Great American Songbook as intimate would be an understatement: “Ella And Oscar” is an introverted album with small, quiet pleasures. Even in the second half, where Brown's bass playing provides additional rhythmic variety, the focus remains entirely on vocals and piano. Most of the tracks on the album are less than five minutes long. Only in the final piece, “April In Paris,” do the musicians really stretch out. Peterson delivers a relaxed but swinging solo, followed by Fitzgerald with remarkably expressive scatting. Before that, in “When Your Lover Has Gone,” she and Peterson exchange melodically captivating ideas in solos lasting four bars each.
As part of the “Pablo Reissue Series,” Analogue Productions now honors this jazz gem with a sonically outstanding reissue, lovingly mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab. The LP, pressed on 180-gram vinyl by industry leader Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and cut at 33 RPM, comes in an tip-on pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing.
