Ella Fitzgerald's “Fine And Mellow” from 1979 is a timeless masterpiece that captures the singer's incomparable artistry and was recorded live in a magical moment. The story behind “Fine And Mellow” begins with the “First Lady of Song” and her collaboration with a group of respected musicians who were at the height of jazz innovation: Tommy Flanagan (piano), Harry Edison (trumpet), Clark Terry (trumpet, flugelhorn), Zoot Sims (tenor saxophone), Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis (tenor saxophone), Joe Pass (guitar), Ray Brown (bass) and Louie Bellson (drums). Producer Norman Granz carefully and deliberately selected the musicians to perfectly complement Ella's vocal style during the recordings, which took place on January 8, 1974. The session offers a rare and authentic insight into the art of improvisation of that era and showcases Ella at the peak of her vocal abilities, with every note floating in the air with an almost tangible quality. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 1980. A review in Audio Magazine described “Fine And Mellow” as “Ella's best album in years.”
As part of the “Pablo Reissue Series,” Analogue Productions now honors this jazz gem with a sonically outstanding reissue, lovingly mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab. The LP, pressed on 180-gram vinyl by industry leader Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and cut at 33 RPM, comes in an tip-on pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing.
