“Plans” is the fifth studio album by indie rock band Death Cab For Cutie, formed in 1997, originally released on August 30, 2005, by Atlantic Records. Plans marked the international breakthrough for the US band and reached number 4 on the Billboard 200. On February 28, 2008, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and nominated for a Grammy Award in the “Best Alternative Album” category at the 48th Grammy Awards on February 8, 2006. The famous magazine Pitchfork wrote about it: “With Plans, Death Cab is ready for the large, diverse audience that a major label can offer, and they make this transition seamlessly, thanks in large part to the underrated production of guitarist Chris Walla, who makes even the strangest flourishes sound completely natural.”
Three singles were released from the album: “Soul Meets Body,” “Crooked Teeth” and “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” all of which made it into the charts. The latter eventually became Death Cab For Cutie's best-selling single to date and earned the band a Grammy Award nomination in the category “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals” the following year. M. Wopperer wrote in Musikexpress: "Death Cab For Cutie have spun a cocoon of velvety, warm sounds around singer Ben Gibbard's songs, mellow and clear, sometimes close to the meditative flow of the American Analog Set, with whom Andrew Kenny Gibbard recently recorded the fine Home EP. But where Amanset's lethargy brings the songs to a standstill, Death Cab For Cutie let their gaze wander over the lightness and sadness of life in quiet but alert contemplation. The musical means on “Plans” correspond as homogeneously as never before."
As part of the “Atlantic 75 Series,” Analogue Productions is now honoring this masterful album with a sonically outstanding reissue: The double LP, pressed on 180-gram vinyl by industry leader Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and cut at 45 RPM, comes in a luxurious old-style tip-on gatefold double pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing.
