We can be truly grateful to Norman Granz for bringing Count Basie and Joe Pass together with Eddie Vinson (saxophone), Willie Cook (trumpet) and a superb rhythm section consisting of Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass) and Louis Bellson (drums) in 1981. The result was one of the most joyful of Basie's famous “Kansas City” sessions for Pablo. Cook and Vinson, two great soloists who deserved more fame, were both outstanding bebop musicians who were able to adapt their work to Basie's rather elementary requirements without seeming condescending or losing substance. In addition, as he impressively demonstrates in “Wee Baby,” Vinson was an outstanding blues shouter. In his small groups, Basie came to the fore more strongly as a pianist than in the big band, and there are numerous examples here that his talent at the keyboard had much more to offer than irony and subtlety.
As part of the “Pablo Reissue Series,” Analogue Productions now honors this jazz gem with a sonically outstanding reissue, lovingly mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab. The LP, pressed on 180-gram vinyl by industry leader Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and cut at 33 RPM, comes in an tip-on pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing.
