Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans had already played together with Miles Davis' sextet on “Kind Of Blue” as well as on the Adderley recordings “Portrait Of Cannonball” and “Jump For Joy.” For the recordings of “Know What I Mean?”, the brilliant alto saxophonist and the equally brilliant pianist and arranger were joined by Percy Heath (bass) and Connie Kay (drums) – the rhythm section of the Modern Jazz Quartet – as well as producer Orrin Keepnews at Bell Sound Studio in New York City. The album was recorded in three sessions – on January 27, February 21 and March 13, 1961 – and released on the Riverside label between October and November 1962. This was a very formative period for Adderley and Evans, which was to be followed by enormous individual success. In a remarkable demonstration of their musical range and sensitivity, the exuberant Adderley and the introspective Evans effortlessly strike a balance that showcases both personalities to great effect. Rick Anderson's AllMusic review states: “It's very hard to imagine that any fan of mainstream jazz would find nothing to appreciate in this superb recording.”
The master tapes of the original recordings offer breathtaking sound quality, which is why Analogue Productions' LP boxes featuring the 45 RPM versions of the collected Bill Evans Riverside albums were frenetically celebrated by audiophiles. Myles Astor (Positive Feedback Online, Issue 34) wrote about the completely analogue remastering of the original tapes by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at AcousTech Mastering: "The 45 RPM reissues are more musical and transparent; the instruments have greater three-dimensionality and the frequency extremes, especially the lower octaves, have higher resolution. Get them before they sell out!“ Fred Kaplan (Stereophile, November 1, 2017) agrees: ”These are, for the most part, exceptionally good-sounding recordings, better than anything else you can find!"
Now, at last, Analogue Productions is offering this title from the magnificent box set for sale individually: as a 180-gram double LP, pressed by RTI and also cut at 45 RPM!
