Billy Cobham is undoubtedly one of the greatest drummers of recent decades. Through his work with the legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra and his collaborations with Miles Davis, not to mention his inimitable playing style and impressive live performances, the American musician has earned high acclaim — even beyond the realms of jazz and rock. Shortly after leaving the Mahavishnu Orchestra, he released his legendary debut album Spectrum, widely regarded as one of the most important and influential jazz albums of all time. Drawing inspiration from the music of Miles Davis, Cobham fuses jazz with rock and psychedelia. Funky grooves and effective guitar melodies blend harmoniously, and Cobham's extraordinary drumming skills bring the true soul of jazz to life. 'Spectrum' reached number 1 in the worldwide jazz charts and even made it to number 26 in the American album charts. Cobham's debut became a true crossover phenomenon that had an enormous influence on the emerging funk/jazz and fusion movement.
Spectrum was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City from 14 to 16 May 1973, and later remixed at Trident Studios in London. Billy Cobham acted as producer through his Billham Cobly Productions, with Ken Scott as sound engineer. Spectrum, released in the same year, boasts an impressive list of contributors, including Jan Hammer on keyboards, Tommy Bolin on guitar, Lee Sklar on electric bass, Ray Barretto on congas and Ron Carter on double bass. Of particular note are the guitar riffs by Bolin (formerly of Zephyr, the James Gang and Deep Purple), who plays wonderfully alongside Cobham's Mahavishnu bandmate Hammer.
As part of the Atlantic 75 Series, Analogue Productions pays tribute to this fusion masterpiece by releasing a superior-quality reissue that has been lovingly mastered by the legendary sound engineer Kevin Gray at Coherent Audio.
