Bill Evans was deeply shaken by the death of the young double-bass prodigy Scott LaFaro (who died in a car accident in the summer of 1961 at the age of just 24) and fell into a deep depression. The magical chemistry of the extraordinary trio, completed by Paul Motian on drums, had been shattered in the most sudden and tragic way, and the great pianist had slipped into a drug addiction from which there was no escape for him. It was Chuck Israel who encouraged him in 1962 to return to the studio with the ensemble that went down in history as “The Second Trio” to record two albums: “Moon Beams,” dedicated to a repertoire of ballads, is the first of these. In addition to exceptional interpretations of standards, there are two unforgettable compositions by Evans: the seductive “Very Early” and “Re: Person I Knew,” a piece that would remain in the pianist’s repertoire until the end of his intense career. Recorded from May 17 to June 2, 1962, at Sound Makers in New York City, the album became an absolute classic of the Riverside catalog.
The master tapes of the original recordings offer breathtaking sound quality, which is why Analogue Productions' LP boxes featuring the 45 RPM versions of the collected Bill Evans Riverside albums were frenetically celebrated by audiophiles. Myles Astor (Positive Feedback Online, Issue 34) wrote about the completely analogue remastering of the original tapes by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at AcousTech Mastering: "The 45 RPM reissues are more musical and transparent; the instruments have greater three-dimensionality and the frequency extremes, especially the lower octaves, have higher resolution. Get them before they sell out!“ Fred Kaplan (Stereophile, November 1, 2017) agrees: ”These are, for the most part, exceptionally good-sounding recordings, better than anything else you can find!"
Analogue Productions is now offering this title from the fantastic box set for sale individually: as a 180-gram double LP, cut at 45 RPM. We’d like to warn you that this strictly limited edition will sell out quickly. So don’t wait too long to make your purchase!
