Ataulfo Argenta died young at the age of 44. Until then he had been a star among European pianists and conductors. His 'España' programme with the London Symphony Orchestra should be familiar to all classical music lovers - although the most 'Spanish' thing about the compilation is Argenta's origins. Only one of the pieces - Granado's Danza Española - was actually written in Spanish.
Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol, Moszkowski's 5 Spanish Dances and Chabrier's España complete the programme, which he recorded with the orchestra at London's Kingsway Hall in January 1957. The LP version was originally released in the USA as one of London Records' acclaimed "Blueback" releases, renowned for their outstanding sound quality. This recording is considered to be unique. The Hybrid SACD has been remastered by Willem Makee.
