The Italian composer and conductor Enrico Mainardi (1897-1976) is one of the most important cellists of the 20th century. His recording of Franz Schubert's “Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in A minor (Arpeggione),” originally released by Deutsche Grammophon, with piano accompaniment by Guido A. Borciani, is now considered legendary: Mainardi balances a strict, serious interpretation with romantic expression – with an unmistakable sound reminiscent of a viola, fast vibrato and precise intonation. Other recordings of the “Arpeggione Sonata” by Mainardi are available, including the live recording from Salzburg in 1959. But the recording made on October 8 and 9, 1950, under the direction of Richard Degenkolbe at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, illustrates Mainardi's musical sincerity and his mission: “My principle and my goal is to serve music and not to use it to promote myself.” Gramophone writes: “Mainardi plays with his usual sophistication and elegance and his finely drawn, aristocratic tone, and it is a great pleasure to hear his ‘thoughtful’, dreamy phrasing in several passages, especially in the first movement.”
Analogphonic commissioned Rainer Maillard (Emil Berliner Studios) to remaster the Universal Music master tapes. The remastering does justice to the outstanding musical quality of the recording in every respect and sets new standards in terms of sound. The LP reissue of “Schubert - Arpeggione Sonata In A Minor, D821” was pressed by Pallas Group GmbH in Germany on high-quality 180-gram vinyl (33 RPM).
